UAB at Illinois
Play: UAB +27.5 — ★★ 2-Star Play
Projected Score: Illinois 38, UAB 17
Illinois should win this game comfortably. The question is whether the Illini should be laying essentially four touchdowns in an opener with a new quarterback, a rebuilt offensive line and a new defensive system. At +27.5, I believe UAB has enough offensive competence and enough uncertainty surrounding Illinois to stay inside the number.
The latest widely available line is Illinois -27.5 with a total of 54.5. Illinois will also be without WR Jayshon Platt and LB Daniel Brown, while UAB RB Rod Robinson II is questionable.
Why UAB Can Cover
- The number is doing a lot of work for us. We don't need UAB to threaten the upset. Illinois can control the game from start to finish and UAB can still cash at 38-17, 35-14 or 34-10.
- Illinois has major offensive-line turnover. Brandon Henderson is the primary returning starter, with veteran Wisconsin transfer Jake Renfro stabilizing center. The rest of the group has to establish chemistry in a real game. That's significant when you're asking an offense to win by 28-plus.
- Katin Houser is a major upgrade at quarterback, but this is still his Illinois debut. He threw for 3,300 yards at East Carolina last year and gives Illinois a substantial QB advantage over Ryder Burton. But Houser is operating behind that reconstructed line and without Platt, one of Illinois' most explosive offseason additions.
- UAB has enough offense to score 14-20 points. Burton threw for 708 yards and seven touchdowns in limited 2025 action and threw three touchdowns in UAB's upset of ranked Memphis. UAB also has a legitimate veteran RB rotation with Bam McReynolds and Ja'Vin Simpkins even if Robinson is limited or unavailable. The three backs entered camp with 2,340 combined career rushing yards.
- Jonah Delange matters with this many points. UAB's kicker is 31-of-38 in his career. When you're catching 27.5, drives that stall at the Illinois 30 can still produce three points instead of nothing.
The UAB Defense Is the Risk
There is a reason this is only a 2-Star Play.
- UAB allowed 38.3 points per game last season.
- The Blazers allowed roughly 192 rushing yards per game.
- Todd Grantham has essentially rebuilt the defense through the portal.
- Illinois has the personnel to eventually punish that new front with Ca'Lil Valentine and Aidan Laughery.
- If UAB starts giving Illinois short fields through turnovers, the handicap can collapse quickly.
Illinois could absolutely win something like 45-10.
But at 27.5, we're being compensated for that possibility.
Why I'm Not Laying 27.5 With Illinois
Illinois has been excellent at home and Bret Bielema has shown he can bury inferior nonconference opponents. The Illini are 12-2 at home over the last two seasons, so there is no argument from me about the likely winner.
My issue is the size of the spread relative to the number of new pieces.
- New starting quarterback.
- Four largely new OL spots around the returning core.
- New defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck.
- New 3-3-5 defensive structure.
- Platt out at receiver.
- Daniel Brown out at linebacker.
- Unsettled kicking/punting roles.
Illinois doesn't merely need to be substantially better.
It needs to play clean enough for four quarters to win by 28 or more.
That's a different standard.
The Backdoor Is Very Live
This is also the type of game where laying a massive number becomes uncomfortable late.
Imagine Illinois leads:
35-10 with eight minutes left.
Bielema starts rotating players. Houser's night may be finished. Illinois becomes conservative offensively.
UAB leaves Burton in the game and continues throwing.
One touchdown makes it 35-17.
Illinois wins by 18 and was never remotely threatened — but UAB covers comfortably.
That's part of what you're buying with +27.5.
Betting Strategy — Wait for the Best Number
I would wait until closer to kickoff before actually playing UAB.
The important target is +28.
Four touchdowns is a major football number, and +28.5 would be even better because a 42-14 or 35-7 Illinois win would still cash.
One correction to the market narrative, though: I wouldn't publish that retail bettors are currently pounding Illinois. The freshest public split I found actually showed a heavy percentage of reported spread tickets on UAB, with the line nevertheless sitting at 27.5.
That doesn't change my strategy:
- UAB +28.5: excellent version of the 2-Star play.
- UAB +28: definitely take it.
- UAB +27.5: still a 2-Star play if that's the best number near kickoff.
- UAB +27 or worse: the value begins dropping enough that I'd reconsider the size of the play.
So I would not rush to lock +27.5 several hours early. Give the market a chance to hand us the four-touchdown threshold. There's no guarantee it gets there, but the additional half-point is worth waiting for in this particular matchup.
Final Prediction
Illinois 38, UAB 17
Illinois has the better quarterback, the better roster, the better secondary and a major home-field/program-continuity advantage. I expect the Illini to win without being seriously threatened.
But winning comfortably and covering 27.5 are two different questions.
UAB has enough experience at quarterback, enough depth at running back and a good enough kicker to manufacture somewhere around 17 points. Illinois has enough first-game uncertainty that I don't want to require the Illini to reach the mid-40s to cash my ticket.
★★ UAB +27.5
Best strategy: wait until close to kickoff and hunt for +28 or +28.5. If it never appears, +27.5 remains the play.
